The Government of Maharashtra, on December 02, 2025, approved and notified the Maharashtra Bamboo Industry Policy, 2025 aimed at strengthening bamboo cultivation, processing, value-addition, and market linkages across the State. The policy recognizes bamboo’s environmental, economic, cultural, and social significance—highlighting its role in carbon sequestration, soil conservation, rural livelihoods, tribal welfare, and contribution to sustainable industries aligned with national initiatives such as the National Bamboo Mission.
The policy notes Maharashtra’s substantial bamboo-growing potential despite declining production trends, and emphasises the need for improved value chains, reduced dependence on imported raw bamboo, and expanded domestic and global market competitiveness. It mandates measures such as increasing bamboo biomass blending (5–7%) in thermal power plants, establishing dedicated markets through the Marketing Department, strengthening processing infrastructure, and promoting high-value bamboo products through research, innovation, and industrial incentives.
Under the policy, the State approves financial outlays of ₹1,534 crore for the first five years (2025–2030) and ₹11,797 crore over a 20-year period, with ₹50 crore allocated for FY 2025–26. New budget heads will be created for incentives and venture capital support to bamboo enterprises. The policy, adopted by the Cabinet on October 14, 2025, aims to position Maharashtra as a leading bamboo-industry hub and enhance export potential.
