The Government of Maharashtra, on July 20, 2026, issued the Maharashtra Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admission to the Full-Time Professional Undergraduate Medical and Dental Courses) Rules, 2026.
The following has been stated:
• The Rules prescribe eligibility based primarily on NEET-UG merit, Maharashtra State Candidature, and eligibility for Institutional, Minority, NRI, OCI and OMS categories. They also provide for applicable reservation, including 25% reservation for specified constitutional categories and 30% reservation for female candidates from seats available to the Competent Authority.
• The Rules establish a Centralised Admission Process (CAP) for online registration, merit-based seat allotment, multiple CAP rounds and online stray vacancy rounds. Candidates may seek betterment in subsequent rounds or retain an allotted seat by submitting a Status Retention Form, subject to the prescribed conditions. The seat structure provides 85% seats through the Competent Authority and 15% under Institutional Quota, with the Institutional Quota being filled on an All-India merit basis and including eligible NRI/OCI candidates. Detailed provisions are also prescribed for category-wise inter-se merit, documentation, caste/caste validity and non-creamy layer certificates.
• The Rules further regulate joining, cancellation, fee refunds, vacant seats and consequences of non-joining, including restrictions applicable after later CAP rounds and the prescribed consequences for candidates who fail to join an allotted seat in the final round. Medical institutions are required to follow the prescribed CAP and admission procedure, verify original documents and comply with the applicable regulatory requirements.
• The Rules also provide for action against false information, forged documents and irregular admissions, and incorporate disciplinary provisions concerning activities such as ragging.
