Industry Specific ComplianceThe Government of Tamil Nadu, on July 21, 2026, published draft amendments to the Tamil Nadu Food Security Rules, 2017, proposing changes to Rule 7(1) and Rule 8(2) concerning the implementation of the Public Distribution System (PDS) and constitution of Vigilance Committees.

The draft provides that the District Supply Officer in districts other than Chennai, the Taluk Supply Officer at the taluk level, and the Assistant Commissioners of the Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department in Chennai will act as Nodal Officers for ensuring smooth implementation of the PDS within their respective jurisdictions. It further proposes changes to the nomination of Vigilance Committee members: in districts other than Chennai, members other than designated Government servants and elected representatives at Shop, Taluk and District levels will be nominated by the District Collector; in Chennai, the relevant members at Shop and Zonal levels will be nominated by the Joint Commissioner, while Chennai District-level and State-level members will be nominated by the Commissioner of Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department.

The draft amendments were issued for public consultation, with objections and suggestions to be submitted to the Director of Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection, Chennai. The amendments will be considered after expiry of 15 days from publication in the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette.
