The District Magistrate on September 30, 2025, issued an order to prohibit the burning of waste materials within the jurisdiction of U.T. Chandigarh. The order was necessitated due to the observed deterioration in air quality caused by the open burning of garbage, crop residue, leaves, plastic, and other combustible materials, posing serious health and environmental hazards.
The order mandates that no individual, organization, or entity shall engage in the burning of waste of any kind—including household, industrial, and agricultural residue. All waste must be disposed of through the designated collection systems provided by the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh. Local authorities and enforcement teams are directed to monitor compliance through regular checks, with any reported violations to be promptly acted upon. However, officially authorized waste incineration for treatment or disposal purposes remains exempt from this prohibition.
The order, issued ex-parte owing to the emergent environmental situation, is effective from 00:00 hours on September 29, 2025, to November 27, 2025. Violations of the order will invite penal action under Section 223 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, along with other applicable laws.
