The Government of Meghalaya (GOM), on October 21, 2025, has declared the list of General Holidays, Local Holidays, and Restricted Holidays to be observed by all Government offices, Magisterial Courts, and Educational Institutions across the State of Meghalaya during the calendar year 2026. The notification has been issued under the powers conferred by Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 and the relevant Government of India notification dated May 8, 1968.
Under this notification, 22 General Holidays have been announced, including key national and regional observances such as New Year’s Day (January 1), Republic Day (January 26), Holi (March 4), Id-ul-Fitr (March 21), Good Friday (April 3), Independence Day (August 15), Durga Puja (October 19–20), and Christmas (December 24–26). District authorities have been authorized to declare up to three Local Holidays for festivals and events of local significance, except in East Khasi Hills District, where such holidays will be decided by the State Government in the General Administration Department.
Additionally, employees are permitted to avail any two Restricted Holidays from the approved list, which includes important cultural and religious occasions such as Guru Nanak’s Birthday, Milad-un-Nabi, and Gandhi Jayanti. This comprehensive holiday schedule aims to ensure observance of both national and regional festivals while accommodating the cultural diversity of Meghalaya.
