The Ministry of Law and Justice on November 17, 2025, issued the Lakshadweep Registration of Societies Regulation, 2025.
The following has been stated namely: -
• It defines eligibility, procedures, and restrictions for registration of societies, including a mandatory Memorandum, bye-laws, a distinct registration number, and compliance with naming rules.
• It lays down detailed provisions on membership, General Body, Governing Body, elections, meetings, record-keeping, and mandatory annual filings such as audited accounts and returns.
• Societies are granted powers to acquire, manage, invest, and transfer property, subject to strict safeguards and permissions, with penalties for misuse by office bearers.
• The Registrar and Registrar General are empowered to conduct inquiries, seize records, supersede the Governing Body, suspend/cancel registration, and manage dissolution and disposal of surplus assets.
• The Regulation provides for penalties, appeals, e-governance, public-document status, and an overriding effect over other local laws, while repealing the earlier Societies Registration Act, 1860, as applied to Lakshadweep.
