EHS ComplianceThe Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) on November 19, 2025, issued clarification on distance criteria for furniture units.

The Board previously prescribed specific distance criteria for carpentry and wooden furniture manufacturing/assembling units under earlier circulars. Following the revised sector classification by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB):

• Carpentry & wooden furniture manufacturing units with spray painting using electrical/motorized machines (excluding sawmills) are now classified under the Green category.

• Such units without spray painting fall under the White category.

The matter was reviewed by the High-Level Technical Committee for clarification on distance norms. Based on its recommendations:

• Green category units (with spray painting) must follow the general distance criteria applicable to Green category industries as per Circular dated 09-08-2004.

• White category units (without spray painting) do not require any distance criteria.

• All earlier distance norms issued through Circulars referred (2)-(7) for carpentry/wooden furniture units and furniture assembling units using MDF, particle board, plywood, etc., are hereby cancelled.
