Labour ComplianceThe Government of Assam, on September 25, 2025, issued a notification revising the conditions for employing women in night shifts (7 PM to 6 AM), superseding the earlier notification dated 26 August 2025. The order outlines mandatory responsibilities for employers to prevent and address sexual harassment, ensure safe working conditions, and implement grievance-redressal mechanisms within factory premises.

The notification mandates employers to maintain proper lighting, CCTV surveillance in critical areas, transport facilities with GPS, separate ladies’ toilets, medical facilities, crèches for children, and exclusive women-supervised accommodations where provided. It also requires setting up complaint committees, sensitising women workers, providing police assistance where necessary, and taking immediate action in cases of harassment, including by third parties. These conditions, detailed on page 2 of the document, emphasise safety, dignity, and support for women employees.

Additional provisions include monthly meetings between women workers and employers to address grievances, paid holidays during menstruation for eligible workers, compliance with statutory labour laws, and disciplinary accountability for non-compliance as observed during inspections. The notification takes effect immediately and aims to ensure secure and equitable working environments for women in night shifts across Assam.
