The Pune Municipal Corporation, on November 18, 2025, issued a notification regarding smoke generated by charcoal, biomass, plastic, or rubber.
The following has been stated:
• It is noted that in many housing societies/ commercial complexes and residential areas in Pune city security personnel burn wood, charcoal or coal while lighting open fires to protect themselves from the cold at night but the smoke generated from this is increasing the pollution in the city and burning fires emit smoke, carbon monoxide and other harmful gases which affects breathing, increases the risk of asthma and other respiratory diseases.
• In order to improve the air quality in the city, the central and state governments have enacted various laws to control such air pollution and guidelines of the National Clean Air Programme, which prohibit the open burning of plastic or rubber, or other waste.
• It is hereby informed that if a bonfire is lit in the premises of a society or on a road in the city and smoke is generated by burning charcoal, biomass, plastic, or rubber and other waste in the open and any watchman, garbage workers or any other workers in any housing complex, or any corporation employees or contract workers appointed by the Municipal Corporation found violating these rules will be penalised by the solid waste management of the Pune Municipal Corporation.
