The Ministry of Communications (MoC) on November 25, 2025, issued the Draft Use of ShortRange Automotive Radar System in the 77 to 81 GHz band (Exemption from Assignment Requirement) Rules, 2025.
The following has been stated namely: -
• The draft rules exempt users from needing a frequency assignment license to operate short-range automotive radar systems in the 77–81 GHz band, provided usage remains shared, non-exclusive, non-protection, and non-interference-based.
• The exemption applies only to devices used in vehicles such as cars, buses, trucks, motorcycles, ships, aircraft while taxiing, and rail systems, ensuring radar systems are vehicle-bound.
• Devices shall comply with specified technical limits, including maximum average EIRP of 50 dBm, peak EIRP of 55 dBm, and emission bandwidth of 4 GHz, along with unwanted emission limits of –32 dBm/MHz.
• If such exempt devices cause harmful interference to licensed users, authorities may direct measures like relocation, power reduction, antenna modification, or discontinuation of use after providing a reasonable opportunity.
• All equipment shall be type-approved as per international or national safety and performance standards (such as ITU, ETSI, ANSI, BIS, ICNIRP), and applications shall follow the official approval format given in the annexure.
• Objections or suggestions, if any, may be addressed to the Joint Secretary (Telecom), Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications, Government of India, Sanchar Bhawan, 20, Ashoka Road, New Delhi- 110001, by December 26, 2025.
