The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on November 28, 2025 issued the Reserve Bank of India (Commercial Banks – Credit Information Reporting) Directions, 2025, establishing a unified and standardised framework for accurate, timely, and secure reporting of credit information by commercial banks to Credit Information Companies (CICs). These Directions aim to strengthen the integrity of credit data, enhance customer rights, and ensure consistency across the banking system.
The Directions mandate compulsory membership of all CICs, prescribe data formats, reporting timelines, error rectification protocols, and data quality standards (including Data Quality Index review). They also detail procedures for correction of Credit Information Reports (CIRs), compensation for customer grievances, internal ombudsman requirements, and best practices to safeguard confidentiality, ensure transparency, and improve customer service. The framework further reinforces usage of CIRs in credit appraisal and mandates display of consumer rights and CIC information.
Overall, the Directions enhance systemic reliability of credit information, improve customer protection, and strengthen regulatory oversight in credit reporting and dissemination.
