The Central Depository Services (India) Limited (CDSL) on December 01, 2025, notified regarding the TRAI direction to mandate pre-tagging of variables in SMS content templates.

The following has been stated namely: -

• CDSL has notified depository participants regarding the TRAI direction mandating pre-tagging of all variable elements in commercial SMS templates, such as URLs, callback numbers, emails, and alphanumeric codes. 

• The move aims to curb misuse of approved messaging templates for phishing, fraud, and unsolicited communication under the TCCCPR 2018 framework. 

• The directive sets strict compliance timelines: new templates must comply within 10 days, automated scrubbing shall begin within 30 days, and all existing templates shall be updated within 60 days of scrubbing commencement. 

• During the initial 60-day implementation window, messages will be delivered in logger mode with warnings, after which non-compliant messages will be rejected outright. 

• CDSL has advised participants to ensure timely implementation and follow TRAI validation rules to avoid disruptions.
