The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution (MoCAFPD) on December 04, 2025, issued update on Mandatory HUID for Silver Jewellery.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has announced the introduction of Mandatory Hallmarking Unique Identification (HUID) for silver jewellery and artefacts with effect from September 01, 2025, marking a major step towards strengthening consumer protection, purity assurance, and preventing fake hallmarking.
Following the introduction of mandatory HUID for hallmarked silver items, more than 17 lakh silver articles have been hallmarked within the first three months, indicating strong adoption by jewellers and consumer trust in the system. Although hallmarking of silver remains voluntary, any silver item that is hallmarked must now carry an HUID. Purity grades 925 and 800 make up nearly 90% of the hallmarked items, with a noticeable rise in hallmarking activity compared to previous years.
The Southern region leads in silver hallmarking volumes, followed by the Western and Eastern regions. Among product categories, payal/anklets form the largest share—mostly in 800 purity—followed by silver diyas in 800 and 925 purity grades.
Union Minister Shri Pralhad Joshi noted that the introduction of HUID for silver significantly enhances purity assurance and combats counterfeit hallmarking. With each hallmarked piece now carrying a unique 6-digit HUID code, the system ensures full digital traceability and strengthens consumer protection, contributing to greater transparency and confidence across the sector.
