The University Grants Commission (UGC) on December 09, 2025, request to all HEls for identification of SWAYAM MOOCs for the January 2026 Semester.
The Government of India’s SWAYAM platform has expanded significantly as a national initiative for providing quality higher education through Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). In its 27th meeting held on 30 October 2025, the SWAYAM Board approved the list of MOOCs to be offered in the January 2026 semester, developed by national coordinators such as UGC, CEC, NPTEL, IGNOU, IIMB, AICTE, NITTTR, and various Institutions of National Importance. The list and the NC-wise last dates for registration are available on the SWAYAM portal, and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are advised to ensure student registrations within the prescribed deadlines.
As per the UGC Credit Framework Regulations (2021), HEIs may permit students to take up to 40% of their total semester courses through SWAYAM. Institutions following these regulations may also allow students to appear for end-term examinations of SWAYAM courses on their own campuses, as per UGC guidelines dated 27 August 2024, in addition to exams conducted by NTA/NPTEL—enhancing accessibility and flexibility for learners.
To ensure effective academic adoption in the January 2026 semester, HEIs are requested to circulate the approved course list internally, convene their SWAYAM Advisory Committee, map relevant courses to existing programmes, finalise credit transfer mechanisms, and publicly display the approved SWAYAM course list on institutional websites and social media. Continued cooperation of institutions is sought for the successful implementation of the SWAYAM initiative.
