The Lok Sabha on December 08, 2025, introduced the Compulsory Yoga Practice in Schools Bill, 2025, which seeks to mandate yoga practice for all students from primary to senior secondary levels across India. The Bill aims to promote good physical and mental health through structured yoga education while requiring both Central and State Governments to ensure availability of teachers, infrastructure, and related facilities.
The Bill defines key terms such as “school,” “appropriate Government,” and “yoga,” and mandates the Central Government to formulate a National Policy on Yoga within one year of commencement. This policy will prescribe compulsory yoga sessions, free instruction, infrastructure standards, appointment of yoga teachers, syllabus design, incentives such as scholarships, and weightage of yoga marks in higher educational admissions. The Bill also obligates State and Central authorities to monitor implementation and empowers them to take punitive action, including withdrawal of recognition from non-compliant schools.
Further, the Bill provides that its provisions shall operate in addition to existing laws, authorizes the Central Government to make rules, and mandates allocation of funds by Parliament to support implementation.
