The Lok Sabha on December 05, 2025, issued the Salt Workers (Welfare) Bill, 2025.
The following has been stated namely: -
• The Bill aims to provide a comprehensive welfare framework for salt workers by legally recognizing them and establishing a National Policy for Salt and Salt Workers to guide their protection and development.
• It mandates the creation of a Salt Workers Welfare Board comprising representatives from government, worker unions, NGOs, and experts to formulate and monitor welfare schemes and oversee implementation.
• Every salt worker must be registered on a digital portal and issued a smart ID card linked to Aadhaar, e-Shra,m, and Jan Dhan accounts for access to benefits.
• The Bill includes provisions for minimum wages, healthcare (including occupational hazards), pensions, maternity/children’s education support, drinking water, housing, and insurance for workers and their families.
• It also requires District-level Salt Welfare Committees and empowers the government to improve working conditions, provide protective gear, and ensure social security mechanisms for this workforce.
