The Labour & E.S.I. Department, Odisha, on July 31, 2025, issued a notification regarding Night Shift Employment for Women in Shops and Commercial Establishments.
The following has been stated: -
•The Odisha Government has exempted all Shops and Commercial Establishments from Section 23 of the Odisha Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1956, to allow women to work night shifts.
•The exemption aims to enhance women’s employment opportunities and promote ease of doing business, subject to strict safety and security conditions.
•Key requirements include written consent, minimum women staffing, safe GPS-enabled transport, rest periods, CCTV, helplines, and compliance with the POSH Act, 2013.
•Non-compliance with these conditions will attract penalties under Section 35 of the Act.
