The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on December 17, 2025, issued directions mandating the adoption of 1600-series by entities regulated by IRDAI.
The following has been stated: -
•TRAI has directed IRDAI-regulated entities to adopt the 1600-series numbering by February 15, 2026, for all service and transactional calls to consumers.
•The move aims to enhance consumer trust, curb spam, and prevent fraudulent calls by clearly distinguishing legitimate BFSI communications.
•The 1600-series, allocated by DoT, has already been adopted by about 570 entities with over 3000 numbers in use following TRAI’s consultations with regulators and TSPs.
•Mandatory, time-bound adoption will help reduce impersonation-based financial fraud and strengthen consumer safety.
