The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on December 17, 2025, notified regarding the compliance of the scheme of Testing for Packaged Drinking Water & Mineral Water.
The following has been stated namely: -
• It has issued a Scheme of Testing for Packaged Drinking Water (PDW) and Mineral Water (MW) to ensure product safety and regulatory compliance following the removal of mandatory BIS certification for these products.
• The scheme sets detailed testing protocols, frequency, and parameters (microbiological, chemical and packaging quality) that manufacturers must follow, including source water testing and corrective actions for non-conformities.
• Manufacturers shall maintain records of sample tests and controls, with periodic tests conducted through FSSAI-notified NABL-accredited laboratories, and only compliant batches may be released to the market.
• The directive applies to all food business operators in the PDW/MW sector from January 01, 2026, to uphold safety standards under the Food Safety and Standards Regulations.
