The Ministry of Power (MoP), on December 23, 2025, in exercise of powers under section 14(a) of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001, and in consultation with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), issued a notification amending the earlier standards notified vide S.O. 185(E) dated January 12, 2009, relating to energy efficiency requirements for distribution transformers.
Through this amendment, paragraph (1) of the earlier notification has been substituted to mandate that all distribution transformers manufactured, commercially purchased, or sold in India must comply with specified type test parameters. These include measurement of short-circuit impedance and load loss, as well as no-load loss and current, in accordance with IS 2026 (Part 1):2011. Additionally, all such transformers are now required to carry the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification mark.
Further, in paragraph 2(2), the timelines mentioned in Table 2 and Table 3 have been updated by replacing the year “2025” with “2026”, and a new Table 4 has been inserted prescribing validity of revised norms for the period 1st January 2027 to 31st December 2029. These amendments strengthen the regulatory framework for energy-efficient distribution transformers and provide clarity on future compliance timelines.
