The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), on December 30, 2025, released the Spectrum Roadmap for 6G Services through its Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing (WPC), outlining India’s long-term vision for planning and managing radio frequency spectrum to support future IMT-2030 (6G) services. The roadmap recognises spectrum as a critical national resource and aims to prepare the country for the expected rollout of 6G technologies around 2030, alongside continued expansion of 5G networks.
The roadmap sets out strategic objectives including long-term spectrum planning across short-term (2025–26), medium-term (2027–30), and long-term (2031–35) phases; alignment with ITU-R study cycles and World Radiocommunication Conferences (WRC-27 and WRC-31); efficient spectrum re-farming and sharing; and the use of advanced monitoring and analytics for optimal utilisation. It also emphasises collaborative research, national technical studies, and the establishment of 6G testbeds to support innovation by academia, industry, start-ups, and MSMEs.
Further, the roadmap is anchored in existing national and international regulatory frameworks, including the Telecommunications Act, 2023, the National Digital Communications Policy, 2018, and the National Frequency Allocation Plan (NFAP-2025), while aligning with global developments under ITU’s IMT-2030 framework. By promoting indigenous R&D, manufacturing, and global harmonisation, the initiative aims to position India as a global hub for 6G innovation, enhance digital inclusion, and ensure resilient, future-ready mobile telecommunications infrastructure.
