The Government of Kerala on January 21, 2026, issued a notification regarding the prohibition of cutting, uprooting, burning or otherwise destroying trees.
The following has been stated namely: -
• No tree standing in the area specified in the Schedule, shall be cut, uprooted, burnt or otherwise destroyed except on the ground that: -
he tree constitutes a danger to life or property
he tree is dead, diseased or wind-fallen.
• Palakkad area is stated in the schedule
It is stated that the land in question, located in the Palakkad Forest Division and involved in O.A. No. 1164/74 of the Forest Tribunal, Palakkad, forms part of vested forest. Although the Tribunal ordered restoration of the area to the petitioner, the Government anticipates that tree cutting may occur upon restoration, adversely affecting soil conservation and moisture retention. To prevent this and preserve existing tree growth, the Government has decided to bring the area under Section 5 of the Kerala Preservation of Trees Act, 1986.
