The Public Health Department, Govt. of Maharashtra on January 30, 2026, extends ESI Act coverage to Educational and Medical Institutions employing ten or more persons.
The following has been stated:
• It has notified the extension of the Employees’ State Insurance Act, 1948, to certain classes of establishments under its powers granted by section 1(5) of the Act, in consultation with the ESIC and with the approval of the Central Government. With effect from August 28, 2025, the provisions of the Act will apply to educational institutions as well as medical institutions, including hospitals, nursing homes, diagnostic centres, and pathological laboratories, irrespective of their ownership or management structure.
• The applicability covers establishments employing ten or more persons, or those that employed such number on any day during the preceding twelve months.
• This notification partially supersedes earlier notifications on the subject and applies in all areas of the State where the ESI Act is already in force under section 1(3).
