The Government of Tripura on January 20, 2026, issues the Tripura Shops and Establishments (Eighth Amendment) Ordinance, 2026 to further amend the Tripura Shops and Establishments Act, 1970.
The following amendments have been stated:
• Section 6 of the Principal Act shall be substituted with the following:-
"(1) Any shop may remain opened, for the purpose of business, throughout the entire period of 24 hours of a day, employing adequate employees to ensure shifting duties;
(2) The daily working hour, spread over and overtime of an employee in such shop, shall be governed by the notification issued by the State Government from time to time".
• Section 7 of the Principal Act shall be substituted with the following:-
"(1) An establishment, including a commercial establishment, may remain opened, for the purpose of business, throughout the entire period of 24 hours of a day, employing adequate employees to ensure shifting duties;
(2) The daily working hour, spread over and overtime of an employee in such shop, shall be governed by the notification issued by the State Government from time to time".
• Amendment of Section 21:-
(1) In sub-section (1), the expressions "one hundred", "five hundred", "one thousand", shall respectively be substituted with the expressions "One Thousand", "Five Thousand", "Ten Thousand";
(2) Sub-section (1A) shall be substituted with the following:-
"(1A) whoever contravenes any of the provisions of Section 5 to Section 13, Section 15 or Section 18, shall on conviction, be punishable with fine, the minimum of which shall not be less than rupees two thousand, but which may extend to seven thousand rupees and incase of any subsequent contravention after first conviction with fine, the minimum of which shall not be not less than rupees three thousand, but which may extend to ten thousand rupees";
(3) In sub-section (2), the expression "imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three months or with fine minimum of which shall be rupees one hundred but, which may extend to one thousand rupees, or with both shall be substituted with the expression "fine minimum of which shall be rupees One Thousand, but which may extend to rupees Ten Thousand."
