The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) on February 09, 2026, issued a circular regarding the implementation of Sagar Mein Samman (SMS) Five-Year Action Plan (2025-2030) for Promotion of Gender Equality and Inclusion in the Maritime Sector.
The following has been stated: -
•Directorate General of Shipping has launched the SMS Action Plan to promote safety, gender inclusion, and empowerment of women across India’s maritime sector.
•The initiative, implemented with the Maritime Union of India as sole investor, focuses on policy reform, infrastructure upgrades, capacity building, and institutional sustainability.
•The phased roadmap includes awareness drives, gender policies, scholarships, leadership programmes, infrastructure improvements, and international collaborations from 2025–2030.
•The circular comes into immediate effect, aiming for long-term gender equity aligned with Maritime India Vision 2047.
