The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers (MoCF) on February 13, 2026, notified regarding the increase in the Price of Cardiac Stents.
The following has been stated:
• Coronary stents — Bare Metal Stents (BMS) and Drug Eluting Stents (DES) — are included in Schedule I of the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013, under which the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) fixes their ceiling prices. The current ceiling prices are ₹10,692.69 for BMS and ₹38,933.14 for DES, applicable nationwide. All manufacturers, importers, and marketers must sell stents within these ceiling prices (plus GST).
• Further, through a notification dated February 12, 2018, NPPA mandated that hospitals and clinics performing angioplasty shall bill stents strictly at the notified ceiling price and clearly mention in invoices the stent category (BMS/DES), brand name, manufacturer/importer details, batch number, and specifications.
• Since “Health” is a State subject under the Constitution, State Governments and Union Territories are responsible for addressing cases of overcharging by private hospitals.
• However, the Central Government enacted the Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act, 2010, and notified the Clinical Establishments (Central Government) Rules, 2012, to regulate both government and private clinical establishments (except Armed Forces institutions).
• States that have adopted the Act are responsible for ensuring compliance, including maintenance of minimum standards of facilities and mandatory display of rates. The Act empowers district-level registering authorities, chaired by the District Collector or District Magistrate, to take action and impose penalties for violations, thereby promoting affordable and transparent healthcare services.
