Commercial ComplianceThe Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (MoCAF&PD) on February 11, 2026, issued the Legal Metrology (General) Second Amendment Rules, 2026, further to amend the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011.

The amendment inserts a new Part D under the Eighth Schedule (Part VI – Clinical Thermometer) to prescribe detailed metrological and technical requirements for clinical electrical thermometers used for continuous measurement of human or animal body temperature. The amendment outlines specifications for scope, terminology, measuring range (minimum 35.5°C to 42.0°C), maximum permissible errors, reference conditions, and technical standards for probes and indicating units.

It introduces mandatory performance tests covering energy dissipation, thermal stability, electrical insulation, mechanical strength, immersion depth dependence, connector resistance, cleaning and disinfection tolerance, ambient temperature variation, voltage fluctuation, humidity, electromagnetic interference, and storage conditions. The rules also mandate traceability to national measurement standards and prescribe detailed testing procedures in Annexures.
