Industry Specific ComplianceThe National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on February 17, 2026, announces FiMI, a domain-specific AI language Model built for India’s payments ecosystem.

NPCI launched FiMI (Finance Model for India) at the India–AI Impact Summit 2026 as a domain-specific language model built exclusively for India’s payments ecosystem. FiMI is designed to natively understand complex UPI workflows, including transaction disputes, mandate lifecycle management, and regulatory queries, overcoming limitations of general-purpose LLMs in high-trust payment environments. It has been trained on Indian financial and synthetically generated payments data and supports structured reasoning, tool invocation, and multilingual capabilities.

FiMI is already deployed nationally through NPCI’s UPI Help Assistant, an AI-powered support system assisting users with grievances and payment-related queries in English, Hindi, Telugu, and Bengali. NPCI has also published a technical paper on arXiv detailing FiMI’s training methodology and evaluation, reinforcing its commitment to transparent and India-centric AI development.
