The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (MCAFPD) on March 12, 2026 issued a notification amending the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011 under the powers granted by the Legal Metrology Act, 2009. The amendment is titled the Legal Metrology (General) Third Amendment Rules, 2026.
Through this amendment, the Central Government has decided to omit Rules 16, 21, and 21A from the existing framework of the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011. The removal of these provisions effectively modifies the regulatory structure governing certain procedural and compliance requirements under the legal metrology regime.
The amendment comes into force from the date of its publication in the Official Gazette, meaning the changes are immediately applicable upon notification. The omission of the specified rules is intended to streamline or revise the regulatory provisions under the legal metrology framework.
