The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on March 11, 2026, issued the advisory regarding mandatory registration/license by Milk Producers (other than members of dairy cooperative societies)/Milk Vendors.
The following has been stated:
• It has issued directions requiring all milk producers and milk vendors who are not members of dairy cooperative societies to mandatorily obtain FSSAI registration or licence before commencing or continuing their food business operations.
• The directive has been issued in view of recent incidents of suspected milk adulteration and aims to ensure compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. It further refers to an earlier FSSAI direction dated December 16, 2025, which mandates regular special enforcement drives for milk and milk products, with action taken reports to be submitted on a fortnightly basis by the 15th and 30th/31st of every month.
• State and UT authorities have been instructed to verify licences, inspect milk chillers to maintain proper storage conditions, and conduct special registration drives to ensure all milk producers and vendors are brought under the FSSAI regulatory framework to safeguard public health.
