The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) on March 17, 2026, discussed Public Insurance Registry and Bima Sugam to Strengthen Digital Insurance Ecosystem
The IRDAI held an industry stakeholders’ discussion on March 17, 2026, in New Delhi to deliberate on the proposed Public Insurance Registry (PIR) and Bima Sugam India Federation. The meeting brought together senior representatives from across the insurance ecosystem to discuss the vision, design, and implementation roadmap of a digital public insurance infrastructure aimed at improving transparency, consumer protection, and efficiency.
The Public Insurance Registry is envisioned as a consent-based, legally compliant digital system covering the entire insurance lifecycle—from policy issuance to claims, grievance redressal, and dispute resolution. It aims to consolidate structured data across stakeholders, reduce information asymmetry, improve fraud detection, and enable data-driven regulatory oversight, thereby strengthening trust and accountability in the sector.
Ajay Seth highlighted the importance of transparency, governance, and data-driven development, while Deepak Sood emphasized the economic and public value of the PIR. Discussions also focused on industry readiness, including compliance, data governance, cybersecurity, and interoperability standards.
The session further covered the role of Bima Sugam in enhancing insurance accessibility. Overall, the discussions stressed the need for strong industry collaboration and alignment between PIR and Bima Sugam to enable seamless access to insurance services and improve customer experience.
