The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on March 13, 2026, Approves Major Regulatory Reforms to Promote Ease of Doing Business and Strengthen Food Safety Framework
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has introduced major regulatory reforms to promote ease of doing business while maintaining strong food safety standards, in line with recommendations of NITI Aayog.
A key reform is granting perpetual validity to Food Safety and Standards Authority of India registrations and licences, removing the need for periodic renewals and significantly reducing compliance costs and administrative burden for food business operators (FBOs). Additionally, from April 1, 2026, turnover thresholds have been revised—raising the registration limit to ₹1.5 crore and State licensing up to ₹50 crore—simplifying compliance, especially for small and micro enterprises.
To ease regulatory requirements, street food vendors registered under the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014 will be deemed registered under FSSAI, eliminating duplicate registrations and benefiting over 10 lakh vendors. The reforms also introduce a technology-driven, risk-based inspection system that focuses on factors like business type, compliance history, and audit performance, reducing unnecessary inspections for compliant businesses.
Overall, these measures aim to create a transparent, efficient, and business-friendly regulatory environment while ensuring safe food for consumers and strengthening regulatory oversight.
