The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued guidelines encouraging Flying Training Organizations (FTOs) to install action cameras in trainer aircraft to enhance training quality, safety, and cockpit culture. These cameras will record cockpit activities, instrument panels, and interactions between instructors and trainees, enabling objective post-flight analysis, better feedback, and improved incident investigation.
The circular applies to all DGCA-approved FTOs and outlines that cameras must be non-intrusive portable devices, requiring no structural modifications or aircraft system integration. Strict safety guidelines have been prescribed, including secure mounting, protection against battery hazards, prevention of electromagnetic interference (EMI), and ensuring that devices do not obstruct pilot view or aircraft operations.
FTOs must also conduct detailed Safety Risk Assessments (SRA) before installation and follow protocols for data handling. Recorded data must be securely stored, labelled, and retained for at least 30 days, with restricted access due to its sensitive nature.
Overall, the initiative aims to improve training effectiveness, accountability, and aviation safety, with all FTOs required to implement these measures within 120 days of issuance.
