The Department of Health & Family Welfare, Punjab, March 14, 2026, issued a notification regarding the declaration of Leprosy as a Notifiable Disease.
The following has been stated: -
•The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare launched the National Strategic Plan (2023–2027) to eliminate Leprosy and recommended making it a notifiable disease.
•Considering its infectious nature, risk of disability, and social stigma, early diagnosis and treatment are emphasized.
•The Government of Punjab has declared leprosy a notifiable disease under the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897.
•All healthcare providers must mandatorily report diagnosed cases within two weeks to district authorities.
•Reporting ensures access to treatment under the National Leprosy Eradication Programme, follow-up care, prevention measures, and management of drug-resistant cases.
