The Government of Karnataka on March 13, 2026, introduced the Karnataka Municipalities and Certain Other Law (Amendment) Bill, 2026 on 2026, proposing amendments to the Karnataka Municipalities Act, 1964 and the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, 1976.
The bill proposes the introduction of provisions requiring payment of advertisement fees for displaying advertisements on land, buildings, structures, or public spaces within municipal areas. Municipal councils and corporations will be empowered to determine the rates and conditions for such fees, subject to limits prescribed by the state government. Certain advertisements such as notices for public meetings and elections will remain exempt from the fee.
The bill also introduces stricter controls on unauthorized advertisements, including mandatory written permission from municipal authorities, penalties and fines for violations, interest on unpaid fees, and powers for municipal officials to remove or demolish illegal advertisements and recover related costs.
