The Government of Maharashtra on March 17, 2026, issued the Maharashtra Municipal Councils, Nagar Panchayats and Industrial Townships (Amendment) Act, 2026, further to amend the Maharashtra Municipal Councils, Nagar Panchayats and Industrial Townships Act, 1965.
It shall be deemed to have come into force on December 26, 2025.
The following has been amended:
• The amendment inserts a new sub-section (3A) in Section 51A-1A and Section 341B-1A of the principal Act, providing that a person elected as both President and Councillor may hold both posts simultaneously, but shall have only one vote (either as President or Councillor), with the President having a casting vote in case of a tie.
• Further, the Maharashtra Municipal Councils, Nagar Panchayats, and Industrial Townships (Third Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, is repealed, while ensuring that all actions taken under the Ordinance are saved and deemed valid under the amended Act.
