The Labour Department, Govt. of Puducherry on March 15, 2026, notified regarding the registration of establishments under the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020, and exemption from registration/renewal under the Puducherry Shops and Establishments Act, 1964.
The following has been stated:
• To promote ease of doing business and reduce compliance burden, the government has introduced a single registration system under the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020 (OSHWC Code). Accordingly, all shops and establishments registered under the OSHWC Code are exempted from registration and all provisions of the Puducherry Shops and Establishments Act, 1964, under Section 6 of the Act.
• However, employers shall comply with all requirements relating to safety, health, working conditions, and record maintenance under the OSHWC Code.
• The exemption does not affect any prior actions taken under the 1964 Act.
