Commercial ComplianceThe Maharashtra Legislature Secretariat (MLS), on March 16, 2026, introduced the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2026 in the Legislative Assembly to amend the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Tax Act, 1958. The Bill proposes revisions in the taxation structure for certain categories of motor vehicles, particularly focusing on older non-transport vehicles and specific vehicle types.

The Bill seeks to amend the Fifth Schedule by revising lump sum tax rates applicable to non-transport vehicles that have completed 15 years from the date of first registration. The revised tax structure differentiates between vehicle types (two-wheelers, petrol, and diesel vehicles) and emission standards (BS-VI and above vs. BS-IV and below), generally imposing higher tax on older and more polluting vehicles.

Additionally, the Bill proposes an amendment to the Sixth Schedule by introducing a cap on tax payable for cranes, limiting it to a maximum of ₹30 lakh. These changes aim to rationalize tax rates and align them with environmental considerations and revenue objectives.
