Industry Specific ComplianceThe National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on March 24, 2026, notified regarding the Biometric Authentication for UPI Payments on Android and iOS.

The following has been stated:

• NPCI BHIM Services Limited, a subsidiary of National Payments Corporation of India, has introduced biometric authentication for UPI payments on the BHIM Payments App, allowing transactions up to ₹5,000 via fingerprint or facial recognition.

• This feature eliminates the need to enter a UPI PIN for small payments, making transactions faster, smoother, and reducing failures due to incorrect or forgotten PINs.

• It can be used for various payment scenarios such as peer-to-peer transfers, merchant QR payments, and online transactions, enhancing ease of digital payments.

• Biometric authentication improves security since fingerprints and facial data are unique and stored on the user’s device, minimizing risks like PIN sharing.

• For transactions above ₹5,000, UPI PIN authentication remains mandatory to ensure an additional layer of protection.
