The Maharashtra Goods and Services Tax Department (MGST), on March 13, 2026, issued a trade circular providing relaxation in registration and filing of returns under the Maharashtra Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act due to technical issues faced on the newly migrated mahagst portal. The circular was issued in reference to the Finance Department notification dated February 28, 2026, and addresses difficulties reported by taxpayers in meeting compliance timelines for March 2026.
To manage system load and ensure timely tax payments, the authority has continued the tax payment facility while temporarily disabling registration and return filing functionalities. An alternative mechanism has been introduced allowing taxpayers to make payments using PAN. Payments made through PAN within due dates will be treated as valid discharge of tax liability. Additionally, taxpayers unable to register must apply for registration by April 30, 2026, to regularize such payments.
The relaxation is limited to compliances due in March 2026 and applies only to PTRC and PTEC taxpayers meeting prescribed payment timelines. The circular is clarificatory in nature and intended to ease compliance difficulties without altering legal provisions under the Act.
