The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB), on March 27, 2026, highlighted enhanced anti-piracy measures under the Cinematograph (Amendment) Act, 2023, which introduces stringent provisions to curb unauthorized recording and transmission of films. Sections 6AA and 6AB prohibit piracy, while Section 7(1A) prescribes penalties ranging from a minimum of 3 months imprisonment and ₹3 lakh fine to 3 years imprisonment and fine up to 5% of the audited gross production cost.
As part of enforcement actions, the Government has notified the Telegram platform under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, 2000, directing removal of 3,142 piracy-related channels. Additionally, access to around 800 websites hosting pirated content has been blocked through Internet Service Providers (ISPs). An institutional mechanism with designated Nodal Officers has also been established to facilitate complaints from copyright holders and ensure timely action.
Further, the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 mandate intermediaries to promptly remove infringing content upon notice. These rules impose obligations to prevent hosting or sharing of content that violates intellectual property rights, thereby reinforcing the Government’s commitment to a robust digital anti-piracy framework.
