The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on March 27, 2026, issued the FAQs on Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Amendment Regulations, 2026.
The following has been stated namely: -
• Food Safety and Standards Authority of India introduced 2026 amendments bringing major reforms like perpetual validity of licenses, deemed registration for street vendors, and risk-based inspections.
• Turnover thresholds revised (effective April 01, 2026):
o Registration: up to ₹1.5 crore
o State License: ₹1.5–50 crore
o Central License: above ₹50 crore
• Perpetual validity removes the need for renewal of licenses/registrations, reducing compliance burden, while maintaining hygiene and safety requirements.
• Street food vendors registered under the Street Vendors Act will be automatically deemed registered under FSSAI, eliminating dual registration.
• A risk-based inspection system will reduce inspections for compliant businesses and focus on non-compliant ones, improving efficiency and transparency.
