MoLE notifies ESI coverage expansion in Meghalaya districts effective April 1, 2026

Labour ComplianceThe Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE), on March 30, 2026, issued a notification under the Code on Social Security, 2020, declaring April 1, 2026, as the effective date for implementation of Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) provisions in specified districts of Meghalaya.

The notification mandates that employers and employees in establishments located in West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, and East Jaintia Hills districts shall begin contributing under Section 29 of the Code from the notified date. Accordingly, employees in these regions will become eligible for benefits under Chapter IV of the Code, administered by the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC).

This extension enhances social security coverage in Meghalaya by bringing additional districts under the ESI framework, ensuring access to medical and related benefits for employees working in notified establishments.
