The Government of Maharashtra on March 13, 2026, issued the Motor Vehicle (Maharashtra Amendment) Bill, 2026.
The following has been stated namely: -
• It shall apply to the State of Maharashtra
• The following has been inserted under Section 163 namely: -
“(3) In case of death or grievous injury of the injured person in an accident caused by drunk driving, the compensation to be paid under Section 161 shall be provided on the condition that in such a case, financial assistance of fifty lakh rupees shall be provided to the family of the deceased through the State Excise Department and financial assistance of ten lakh rupees shall be provided to the injured person through the State Excise Department.
• The following has been inserted under section 185(b) namely: -
“For driving under the influence of alcohol, instead of the text: imprisonment for up to six months or a fine of ten thousand rupees or both for the first offense, the text should be inserted: imprisonment for up to three years or a fine of fifty thousand rupees or both for the first offense. For the second offense, the text should be inserted: imprisonment for up to two years or a fine of fifteen thousand rupees or both for the second offense. For the third offense, the text should be inserted: imprisonment for up to seven years or a fine of one lakh rupees or both for the second offense.”
