The General Administration Department of Kerala, on April 9, 2026, declared a public holiday across the state in connection with the General Election to the Kerala Legislative Assembly, 2026. The holiday applies to all public offices and educational institutions.
The order also declares the day as a holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 for government, quasi-government, and commercial establishments. Further, in accordance with Section 135B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the poll day is mandated as a paid holiday for employees of commercial undertakings and private institutions, ensuring no wage deduction.
Employers are required to grant paid leave to all eligible voters, including daily wage and casual workers, even if they are employed outside their constituency. The Labour Department has been directed to ensure compliance, and any violation may attract penalties, reinforcing employees’ right to vote without loss of wages.
