Industry Specific ComplianceThe National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on March 31, 2026, notified regarding the Inclusion of Purpose Code & LRN in Adjustment Report (Effective May 15, 2026).

NPCI has introduced ‘Purpose Code’ and ‘Lite Reference Number (LRN)’ in the adjustment report to improve reconciliation, based on requests from member banks. These new fields replace the earlier unused fields—Chargeback Date and Chargeback Reference Number—without altering the overall report structure.

The Purpose Code will appear as a 2-digit numeric value in the report (though stored as 10 characters in the database), while the LRN remains 35 alphanumeric characters with no change in length. The report format (.csv) otherwise remains unchanged.

These changes will go live from May 15, 2026, and member banks are advised to update their systems accordingly and inform all relevant officials to ensure smooth implementation.
