The Government of Himachal Pradesh, on April 01, 2026, issued the Himachal Pradesh Lifts (Amendment) Bill, 2026, further to amend the Himachal Pradesh Lifts Act, 2007.
The following has been stated: -
•The Himachal Pradesh Lifts (Amendment) Act, 2026, expands the scope of the original Act to include escalators and travellators along with lifts.
•It introduces new definitions and designates authorities such as the Chief Inspector and Assistant Inspector of Lifts.
•Prior permission is required for installation, with a registration fee of ₹2500 (except for government-owned systems), and detailed technical specifications must be submitted.
•License fees have been increased to ₹5000, with annual renewal required and periodic fee hikes of 10% every three years.
•Strict penalties of ₹50,000 are imposed for operating without a valid license.
•The Act also strengthens inspection powers, allowing authorities to enter premises, ensure safety compliance, and order repairs or shutdowns if installations are unsafe.
