The Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC) on April 10, 2026, issued Procedure to handle export cargo originating from SEZ, in view of disruption in maritime routes due to closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
To address disruptions caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Customs has introduced a simplified and uniform procedure for handling export cargo originating from SEZs that is stranded or returned at gateway ports. The aim is to reduce congestion and facilitate smoother trade operations.
The key relief provided is that exporters can request cancellation of LEO/Shipping Bills at the originating SEZ, after which the cargo can be moved from the gateway port for return or re-routing without being sent back to the SEZ. Additionally, de-stuffing and storage at Customs Bonded Warehouses is permitted, and re-routing can be done by filing fresh Shipping Bills. The process is to be handled electronically via email to ensure faster clearance and minimal documentation.
These measures, along with earlier relaxations, will remain valid till April 30, 2026, and are intended to expedite cargo handling and ease operational challenges faced by exporters.
