The University Grants Commission (UGC), on April 09, 2026, issued a public advisory reiterating that degrees can be awarded only by institutions established under a Central Act, State Act, or those specifically empowered under the UGC Act, 1956.
UGC highlighted that several institutions are illegally offering degrees in violation of statutory provisions, and such degrees will not be recognised for purposes of higher education or employment. This warning is aimed at protecting students from enrolling in unrecognised or fake institutions.
Students, parents, and stakeholders are advised to verify the authenticity of universities on the official UGC website before admission. Any institution operating in contravention of UGC regulations should be reported to the Commission for appropriate action.
