The Government of Karnataka, on April 09, 2026, notified the Karnataka Government Educational Institution’s Lands (Protection and Regularisation) Act, 2026.
The following has been stated: -
•The Act provides for the protection and regularisation of lands used by Government Educational Institutions in Karnataka.
•If such institutions have occupied land continuously for 12 years, the land is deemed to vest with the State Government, even without formal transfer documents.
•It bars legal claims and ongoing cases over such lands, with a limited exception for genuine title holders who can approach the authority within 30 days.
•Continuous use of land for education is presumed as a valid public purpose, and delayed objections are not entertained.
•The Act establishes a system for land records, vesting certificates, grievance redressal, and appeals, with officials like BEO/DDPU acting as Estate Officers.
•It also provides for the removal of encroachments, rule-making powers, and overriding effect over conflicting laws to ensure protection of such lands.
It shall come into force on such date as the State Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint.
